International travelers have unwittingly discovered how funny and often embarrassing it can be when English slang phrases are translated into other languages. “Shake a leg,” “with a little, blood, sweat and tears,” or “I’ve got my eye on you” might be interpreted to mean something totally different or even opposite than the original intent.
God says He knows how many hairs we have on our heads. In Luke 12:7, it says, “Indeed the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” In Psalm 139:13–14, God says, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place.” God was there when we were conceived. He was there when we were growing from atom to embryo. His eyes were on each stage of our formation. Isn’t it wonderful to be the center of attention?
Human comparisons are a tough stretch but are one way we can attempt to understand this concept. Remember what it was like when you received undivided attention from your special someone? You felt cherished, honored, and adored. God gives us His exclusive attention all of the time. We can fully depend on the Holy Spirit’s guidance to help us understand the concept of His compassion and receive the fullness of this part of His awesome love.
We are the apple of God’s eye. God’s attribute describing His concern for us is omniscience—the fact that God has infinite knowledge and knows all things. An amazing concept for those of us who worry about things we know. It’s almost unfathomable for us to think that God knows all things and yet He keeps control. Anne Graham Lotz says, “The knowledge of omniscience of God is very important in understanding God’s love. What it means is that we were on Jesus’ mind when He died.” God-man, Jesus, loved us so much, He was thinking about us. Jesus understood why He died and realized it was because He loved you and me that He gave up His precious life. With this revelation, John 3:16 has new meaning.
In 2 Chronicles 16:9 we read, “For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His.” I am awestruck by a God who is seeking me. Not only are God’s eyes of love on me because He is concerned for my well-being and my wholeness, He is looking for ways to support me. I accept the facts of Psalm 139:1, that He “searches me and knows me.” As I align my heart with His, I fall in love again with the God who seeks me as I continue to seek Him.

Father, thank you for keeping your eye on me, as your eye is on the sparrow. I am amazed that you notice, you know, and you are concerned about even the tiniest detail that concerns me. Thank you. In Jesus’ name, amen.
