31 Days to Discover Israel | The Mount of Beatitudes

#1 The Gardens of the Mt of Beatitudes

Here’s our next stop: Mount of Beatitudes! I am amazed to stand where Jesus taught the Sermon on the Mount! The journey walking up the path to the top of the mountain was especially meaningful. Every 500 yards was a marker with one of the verses from the Sermon on the Mount from Matthew 5:3–10, which says, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

#2 The Sea of Galiee from Mt of Beatitudes

Debbie Shick presented a devotional about Jesus’ teaching and preaching to the 5,000. She reminded us how Jesus drew all people to himself. He showed them how to look up to others and bring out the best in others. Blessed are those who know their spiritual poverty. He said, “I’m showing you a lifestyle different than others, but this lifestyle has rewards.”

#3 Sanctuary at the Mt of Beatitudes

She mentioned there are nine Beatitudes with no nouns—all verbs. Jesus teaching on the Beatitudes moved the Ten Commandments to a higher level. People need a savior. Blessed are those who long for God’s way of thinking. Blessed are the pure in heart. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for him. When we respond to Jesus, we are willing to share with others, open our mouths, share His truth, and let them hear what He has done.

#4 Mt. 5 vs 4

Luke 4:8 and Isaiah say, “The spirit of the Lord is upon me, to open my mouth.” Debbie suggested Jesus was below, speaking up to the people, since his teaching method was to humble himself in posture and service. The exact location of where Jesus actually taught may have been different. In 614 A.D. all the Christian churches here were destroyed by the Muslims. The current church building on the grounds was rebuilt in 1937.

“Heavenly Father, thank you for your son’s teaching on the Beatitudes. Let us heed His example of humility in service. Thank you that you bless us when we lift others above ourselves. In the state our spiritual bankruptcy, may your grace and mercy fill us more and more to overflow with love for all we meet. In Jesus’ Name, with the power of the Holy Spirit we pray. Amen.”

Tomorrow’s stop: Capernaum (in Hebrew it means border, between Galilee, Decropolis, and Golan Heights.
