Alpha and Omega

Alpha and Omega is a powerful name of God. Revelation 1:8 says, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” Jesus is here declaring himself to be everything from A to Z and in complete control of history. Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet, and Omega is the last letter. The Lord God is the beginning and the end. When He returns for His second coming, He will do so with all power and majesty in contrast to His first coming as a humble servant. All the Christian world awaits and joins the voice of the apostle John in Revelation 22:20: “Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus!”

Remember our study of El Olam? El Olam is the name of God that means He is eternal, without beginning or end, he is infinite. The infinity symbol, a mathematical symbol, is sometimes used to illustrate the eternal concept of God. So how can God be eternal, yet at the same time have a definite beginning and end? Revelation 22:13 explains, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” God says he is the beginning of all things and the end of all things. God is the creator of time. He is beyond time itself, yet at the same time, He inhabits time. He is in control of the span of time, from His and time’s beginning throughout eternity, infinity and beyond.

Are you totally confused? This concept might seem to twist your brain into a pretzel of contrasts, yet this reminds us that God is beyond our comprehension. (Job had a lengthy discussion with God about this. God answered him in Job 38:4-5, “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it?”)  Is there any question God can be trusted with the daily struggles of our lives from our first newborn cry to our last breath? Absolutely not.

Revelation 1:7–8 says, “Behold, he is coming with the clouds and every eye will see Him, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him; and all the tribes of the earth will mourn over Him. So it is to be. Amen. ‘I am the Alpha and the Omega,’ says the Lord God, ‘who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.'”

Alpha and Omega. The First and the Last. The Beginning and the End. Our God is the beginning of all things and the end of all things. On that day when this old earth has ceased to exist, when there is a new heaven and a new earth. There will be a day of the New Jerusalem when Alpha and Omega will be seated on the throne and make everything new. Today, we can stand on the finished work of the cross of Christ. Revelations 21:6–7 says, “He said to me, ‘It is done, I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give drink without cost from the spring of the water of life. He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son.”

Let’s pray:

Alpha and Omega, thank you for who you are. I praise you for the mysteries of your being. Thank you for the plans you have for mankind. I praise you for being the First and the Last. Thank you for including me in the eternal purpose you have for the world. Help me to continue to be a light to the world so that all men and women may know Jesus Christ as Lord. Even so, come, Lord Jesus! Amen.”
