“Peace on Earth and good will to man” is the promise of Christmas and is the theme of the Christmas carol entitled, “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day.”

This carol was written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in the year 1864 in Boston, Massachusetts. The awful misery of the Civil War had greatly affected this American Poet, who believed God was ultimately good and personally concerned for people. The original song had seven stanzas and was called “Christmas Bells,” the verses interspersed with Civil War drama.

The primary message of the carol is one of hope, that God is in control and will cause right to rule. The ringing of the Christmas bell at any time can remind one of God’s sovereignty. It was God’s plan to send His son, Jesus, the Prince of Peace, to bring order to a world of chaos and confusion.
