31 Days to Discover Israel | Summer 2015

Israel - Sheryl n Jim Blue Mosque Istanbul TY

Do you have a bucket list? You know, a running tally of things you would like to do before you kick the bucket? I don’t mean to be disrespectful of those who have passed away by using the term “kick the bucket,” but most of us have dreams and desires of historical and mysterious places we would like to visit or exciting things we would like to do before we die.

I’ve held my bucket list loosely, especially when as a single woman with a limited income, I knew my finances had to be specifically used for immediate needs. During the five-year span of my second-time singleness, my bucket list was very short, but it did include a visit to the Holy Land. I decided to be content with visiting the Holy Land vicariously through a Beth Moore or Ray VanderLan Bible study DVD or an in-depth Bible study on Israel.

“Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.” —Psalm 37:3,4

During our year of dating, Jim and I discussed visiting the Holy Land, as we share a common love for the Jewish people and a burning desire to experience our biblical roots. We were not sure we would marry or stay together, but for many reasons, we decided not to put a trip to Israel in our schedule. After we married, there were other tasks pulling at our time and our finances, so a trip to Israel was not exactly on our top priority list.

Imagine our excitement when we heard our pastors would lead a tour from our church in May 2015. Envision our discouragement when we found out how much it would cost. We released our plans, decided we couldn’t afford to go. It was tax season; Jim anticipated we would have to pay out a large sum of money for our income taxes. To our surprise, we were told we would be given a refund. The tax refund was the exact amount of money we needed to cover the price of the trip to Israel! We were excited, humbled, and honored to have the opportunity to experience the Holy Land.

I am amazed with the timing of the trip to Israel; God has entrusted me with life lessons to share with you. It is my privilege to invite you to join me for the next 31 days to share Biblical insights, spiritual encounters, and renewed love for God through my visit to Israel. Won’t you join me? I hope so.

“For you are a holy people to the Lord your God; the Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for Himself; a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth.” —Deuteronomy 7:6
