Jehovah Hamelech: The King

King is a title of status given to royalty. Some of the kings I’ve heard of are biblical: King David, King Solomon, and King Jehosaphat. Current day kings I’m aware of are Burger King, the band For King and Country, Martin Luther King, and Elvis Presley. Jehovah Hamelech is the name of God that means “The King.” Our God is King; our God reigns! Let’s honor him as Lord and King, the high and lofty one. He is absolute, sovereign over His people, Ruler of all things, Prince, Potentate, Majesty on High. When God revealed himself to the patriarchs, it was as God Almighty or God Most High. To Moses it was Yahweh, I AM. When the Israelite nation was brought out of Egypt, God revealed himself as their King. The Song of Moses concludes with the triumphant “ruling” words:

“The LORD will reign for ever and ever.” (Exodus 15:18)

This is the first time in the Old Testament mālak occurs with God as its reference. It means “to reign, to be and exercise functions of a monarch, whether male (king) or female (queen).”

Melek is by far the most common word in the Old Testament for chief magistrate or ruler and is usually translated “king, lord, captain, ruler, prince, chief.” The title of King for God doesn’t appear much in the Pentateuch, but the symbolism of Exodus makes it clear Israel was to see Yahweh as their King.

Jesus promised us, His followers, we would inherit the kingdom of God. Can you imagine the impact this truth would have on us if we lived in the reality of Zechariah 14:9, which says, “The Lord will be king over the whole earth. On that day there will be one Lord and his name the only name”? Think about it: Very soon, we will live in a marvelous place where there will be worship, love, peace. We will be loved, accepted, understood, and included. I don’t know about you, but this gives me renewed resolve and re-aligned perspective on how I will serve Jehovah Hamelech—the King—today.

Here are a few more future promises from our King about His coming Kingdom where you and I will live with Him for eternity.

“The righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father.” Matthew 13:43

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘come you who are blessed by my Father, take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.” Matthew 25:34

“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Revelation 21: 1–4

A future kingdom awaits us! I am more than excited and highly motivated to make a difference today as I serve my King and build His kingdom together with you until His return.

Psalm 98:6 says, “With trumpets and the blast of the ram’s horn, shout for joy before the Lord, the king.”

This is a great piece called “That’s My King” from SM Lockridge.

Let’s praise our King:

Dear Lord, you are king of kings and Lord of Lords. Thank you for your strength and presence as almighty ruler, our great King. In Jesus’ name, amen.
