Thanksgiving is coming! I am thankful to share our first Experiencing God Through His Names FB study group finished on October 31, 2016.
Wow, such a special group! We were joined by women and men, ages spanning generations, from places across the USA. Enjoy these comments from a few of the group's 45 members:
Have you begun planning your New Years’ goals? If not, it’s time to begin to pray about what God has for you in 2017. But wait, I have an idea. Won’t you join me and others for 31 days? We are putting together another online Facebook group studying Experiencing God Through His Names. The second study group began on October 1 and is currently on Day 24. We will finish on October 31, so we are making plans to begin our third group on January 1. Please join us.
The names of God each reveal something about His character. It takes time to examine these special names of God, one by one; it’s like looking at a postcard of the Grand Canyon. The solo shots each show a segment of a breathtaking view. When we absorb truths about God one at a time, we can better understand the reality and certainty of His character and the capability of His presence in our daily lives.
Are you aware that understanding God’s titles reveals His purposes and His commitment to us and gives practical handles for life applications? There are many ways to draw close to God as we study His Word. Spiritually, something exciting and personal happens when we study God’s names. We find out about His unique character qualities and experience His Holy Spirit presence.
Transformation begins with a choice to allow something new to take place. Defined, transformation means "a thorough or dramatic change in form or appearance." I remember learning about the metamorphosis of the life cycle of a caterpillar as it spun it's cocoon or chrysalis to allow conversion into a monarch butterfly. Even as an eight year old, studying this alteration of life seemed remarkable and almost unbelievable. There are many spiritual parallels when you and I choose to allow God to speak to us through a study of His attributes, when we call on His names and invite Him to change us into the likeness of His son, He does something new. "Be careful, sweetie,” my dad’s strong voice cautioned me to avoid the object in the road. He’d just removed the training wheels on my Schwinn; so even though I was seated securely on the banana seat, both hands on the handlebars, the front tire still wobbled a little. I focused intently on the path ahead, “Yes, Father,” I said. I veered to the left just a little and swerved to avoid the obstacle.
“Father is one of the most familiar and commonly used name of God."
However, some cannot relate to God as a caring, tender and involved dad, like mine, because they've been disappointed by their own negative personal paternal experiences. So what's the big deal about 'spiritual fatherlessness'? A lot.
Last month, I took a business trip to Cincinnati, Ohio for the Advanced Writer's and Speaker's Conference and the International Christian Retail Show (plus the launch of my third book, Experiencing God Through His Names). What an amazing experience.
From the time I stepped foot onto the airplane, the voyage was full of divine encounters. I will continue to share a few more of them in the weeks and months ahead. A highlight of the time was a media tour of the Ark Encounter.

I'm thankful for a lifetime of mentors. These godly women have walked me through trials and triumph with a desire to help me draw close to Jesus. A few of them are: Shirley Adkins (my mom), Margy Eberhart (late camp directors' wife who led me to the Lord), Linda Ballweg (college Bible study leader ), Sue Sabaloni (MIT prayer group leader), and Judy Hampton (late speaker and author). In 2003, Judy encouraged me to join Advanced Writers and Speakers Association, a sisterhood of women who communicate God's Word through the written and spoken word.
